Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty can be defined as a surgical procedure aimed at reshaping the nose for both aesthetic and medical purposes. This operation is performed by a specialist in nasal aesthetics to correct congenital or acquired deformities in the nasal bones and achieve a more harmonious appearance. Concerns such as a dorsal hump, a long nasal structure, a drooping nasal tip, large nostrils, or asymmetry often lead individuals to opt for rhinoplasty. The procedure encompasses processes for lifting and refining the nose to improve both form and function.
Who are Suitable Candidates for Rhinoplasty Surgery?
Rhinoplasty is typically performed for two main purposes: aesthetic enhancement and functional improvement. For functional issues, the procedure can be performed during childhood before bone development is complete. However, aesthetic surgeries are usually recommended after the age of 18, once bone development is fully matured.
It is equally important that the individual is mentally and psychologically prepared for the process. The primary goal of rhinoplasty is to create a natural, functional, and structurally sound nose, thereby boosting the individual’s self-confidence.
At What Age Can Rhinoplasty Surgery Be Performed?
Aesthetic surgeries have become increasingly common in recent years, with rhinoplasty being one of the most popular procedures in this field. However, the age limit for nasal aesthetics is generally determined by the completion of bone development. This process varies between males and females, with bone maturation typically occurring between the ages of 14 and 16. Therefore, performing rhinoplasty before the muscles and bones have adequately matured is not recommended.
How is Rhinoplasty Performed in Patients with Thick Skin?
In individuals with thick skin, post-surgical swelling may persist for a longer period, and it can take more time for the nasal contours to become defined. However, advancements in modern techniques and treatment methods have significantly addressed these challenges. The recovery process for thick-skinned patients may take longer, and achieving the desired results might require additional time.
What Should Be Considered After Rhinoplasty?
Post-operative care plays a crucial role in the recovery process after rhinoplasty. Mild bleeding and drainage may occur during the first week. It is important to keep the head elevated with two pillows, take prescribed medications regularly, and clean the inside of the nose with saline or seawater solutions.
In the initial days, breathing through the mouth might be necessary, and it is recommended to keep the nasal passages moisturized and apply ointments as directed. To reduce swelling and bruising in the facial area, the use of prescribed medications is advised.
How is Rhinoplasty Surgery Performed?
Rhinoplasty can be performed using two primary techniques: open and closed rhinoplasty.
• Open Rhinoplasty:
This technique involves making a small incision across the columella (the tissue between the nostrils), providing the surgeon with a broader view of the surgical field. It is often preferred for patients with significant nasal deformities or for revision surgeries. The advantage of this method is improved visibility, while the downside is that the recovery process may take slightly longer.
• Closed Rhinoplasty:
In this approach, incisions are made inside the nostrils. It is a preferred technique because it leaves no visible scars and allows for a faster recovery. However, it offers a more limited surgical view compared to the open method.
Is Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty Possible?
Non-surgical nose aesthetic procedures include methods such as nasal tip Botox, fillers, or thread lifts. However, the effects of these treatments are typically temporary and may not be suitable for all nasal structures. For individuals planning surgery in the future, opting for these methods might complicate the surgical process.
